Awkward
August 23, 2026
I have realized that I find it deeply awkward whenever someone says something nice to me.
Whenever someone comes up to greet me, acknowledges something I did, or gives me a compliment, my brain just freezes for a second. In my head, I honestly feel like I haven't done anything extraordinary or great. I am just figuring things out, breaking stuff, and trying to learn. So when praise comes my way, it feels completely out of place.
The worst part is the physical reaction. I don't know what to say or where to look. This strange, completely unnatural, forced smile instantly creeps onto my face. It is not even a real smile, it is just my facial muscles desperately trying to signal that I acknowledge the human interaction while having zero idea how to process it gracefully.
Do you say "thank you" and sound like you agree that you're great? Do you downplay it and risk sounding dismissive or fake-humble? Usually, I just end up standing there with that awkward half-grin, nodding slightly, hoping the conversation moves on to literally any other topic as quickly as possible.
I am infinitely more comfortable dealing with broken code, cryptic concurrency bugs, or silent terminal errors than I am handling a simple, genuine compliment. At least a compiler error tells you exactly what went wrong. A compliment just leaves you wondering how you're supposed to respond without feeling like an imposter.
Maybe it gets easier with time. Or maybe I will just keep perfecting the art of the awkward smile.
